Three expeditions to discover Madagascar through science

The volcanoes, karsts and islands of the North; a geotraverse from the East to the South, from Andasibe to the Ranobe lagoon; the great crossing of the South to Anosy. Three complementary terrains, one leading geoscience thread.

Expedition 01 · 12 or 15 days

Northern Madagascar

Volcanoes · Tsingy · Sambirano · Nosy Be

Volcanism, Amber Mountain, the Red Tsingy, Ankarana, the Sambirano, Nosy Be. Optional mangroves and gold deposits of Ambilobe–Betsiaka.

Expedition 02 · 23 days

Deep South of Madagascar

Highlands · Isalo · Mahafaly · Anosy

Crystalline basement, Andasibe, central uplands, Isalo, the Toliara sediments, arid lands and the Anosy coast.

Expedition 03 · 14 days

East and South of Madagascar

Andasibe · Ranomafana · Isalo · Ranobe

Two rainforests, the Ankaratra volcanoes, the Isalo sandstones, the Ilakaka gemstones and the Ranobe reef. A more compact geotraverse, flying back from Toliara.

Three terrains, one leading discipline

Geosciences provide the common thread of all three expeditions; four associated disciplines complete the reading of each territory.

Learning goalsUnderstand how volcanism, erosion, limestone dissolution, watersheds and marine dynamics have shaped landscapes, biodiversity and human activities.Understand how geological history and the availability of water shape ecosystems, human activities, resources and ways of life.Understand how landscapes were built, from the ancient basement to the sandstones and the coast, and how they shape living things and human activities.
