Research that respects the places it studies

Northern Madagascar is not a backdrop: it is a lived-in, protected and governed territory. Our field rules apply to every journey and every mission.

Six field rules

The value of the program lies not only in hosting foreign missions, but in building lasting collaborations.

Scientific sovereignty: mixed teams, involvement of Malagasy researchers and students, and a structured copy of the data kept in Madagascar.
  1. 1

No sample collection, capture, biological sampling or excavation without the appropriate formal permit.

  2. 2

In protected areas, the manager’s rules and authorised routes take precedence over the academic program.

  3. 3

Data on communities, mining practices or local knowledge are gathered with consent and a stated purpose.

  4. 4

Sacred sites, tombs, fady (local taboos) and cultural heritage are covered in the briefing before any activity.

  5. 5

Any mission that produces data on a territory plans to share results locally or institutionally.

  6. 6

People’s safety comes first: weather, tracks, mining hazards, karst environments, boating, health and evacuation are design parameters.
